Reflection-2

The essential element 2 appeared to be the phase that understanding and resolutions started to show up. The process began looking into the child's environment, family and other aspects that might play an important role in their disability. The parent's issues also being addressed as part of resolution to the child's problems.
Society's perception of a child diagnosed with FASD can lead to blaming the parents which often creates other problems with the child. The blaming a parent may cause a child not being diagnosed and not getting the necessary help he/she might need because of the stigma attached. Children with FASD that are not diagnosed are probably the largest part of our children with psychological or behavioral problems in our schools today.
The reading also gives me hope because of the approaches being used to help our children. Involving the parents in all decision making about their children' well-being both mentally and physically will be beneficial to the child. The overall acknowledgment of the issues and not being afraid of using all the approaches to benefit the child is paramount, in this reading it appears some of these issues are being addressed.

Reflection-1

My reading of the essential element one was enlightening in ways that i had not yet thought about. while viewing or observing children with behavior problems and or physical issues cause me to pause and look at children I work with in a totally different perspective. I work with children in of all ages and find that some of the issues I observe may be a result of FASD.
I often am called to the classroom or office when a child acts out and asked what I can do to help the child, however I am not equipped with enough information to do anything except try and calm the situation, yet the types of interaction often needed are the connections between teachers and students. There appears to be a lack of communication or misunderstanding of what is taking place and how to resolve the problem.
After reading the essential element I wonder if a majority of the classroom issues and outburst are manifestations of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The reading gives me pause to consider the issues I see on a daily basis from children, and it is usually the same children being dealt with, but not knowing or the child not being diagnosed could be the culprit of so many problems we see in our children today.
